My Bio – Emily’s Herstory of Giving Back

My name is Emily and I’m 26 years old. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and work as a Nutritional Assistant at a hospital just outside Sacramento, California. Besides helping others in my work, I have two passions:

  • Designing and making jewelry
  • Finding ways to give-back to those in need, especially in the area of food insecurity.

Although I’ve always made small contributions like volunteering with Meals on Wheels or donating to my local food bank, I really didn’t start my giving-back efforts in earnest until the pandemic hit in 2020.

Covid-19: Challenges and New Beginnings

During the early days of Covid-19, I lost my part-time job at a local gym. When I applied for unemployment, I was told I was eligible for $66 every two weeks however, when I received my first check, I was shocked to see that I received an extra $600 stimulus payment. Since I wasn’t making nearly that much before I lost my job, I knew that there were more important places the money should go.

My sister, who at the time was selling online and donating a part of the profits to Pandemic of Love, suggested I do the same. Over the next 10 months, through Pandemic of Love, I was able to assist dozens of individuals with their struggles brought on by Covid-19. I helped by sending them grocery store gift cards, paying their utility bills and sometimes even helping them put gas in their cars.

Creating Hoops Fighting Hunger

When my stimulus money stopped, I was determined to keep my giving-back efforts alive. Given my love of jewelry and my passion for helping others with their food insecurity issues, I decided to create a business that combined the two. From there, Hoops Fighting Hunger was born.

About Hoops Fighting Hunger

Through my online store HoopsFightingHunger.com, I sell hoop earrings and donate a portion of the profits to charities that help eliminate food insecurity. My efforts have been featured on:

  • ABC-10 News
  • CBS News
  • Good Day Sacramento

To date, I have provided over 65,000 nutritious meals for individuals who are unsure where their next meal is coming from.

Inspiration from Taylor Swift

One of my personal heroes is Taylor Swift, for many reasons, including her decision to help others. While I don’t have her musical talent and I will never reach her level of fame and fortune, I do share one thing in common with Taylor and that is her concern for people not having enough to eat.

Taylor routinely donates to local food banks when she travels around the country and is always one of the first people to provide nutritional assistance to those experiencing the damage effects of natural disasters. Hurricanes, floods or fires, Taylor is always one of the first to offer a helping hand when others are in need.

Honoring Taylor Swift

As a way of honoring Taylor for her lifetime of giving-back and to help her, in my own small way, to make the lives of those in needs a little better, I am proud to offer this one-of-a-kind pendant. Thirteen percent (13%) of all sales proceeds will be donated to help those experiencing food insecurity.

Please help me make a difference in the lives of those who may not know where their next warm meal is coming from while honoring Taylor at the same time.
